  1. The ProGrade discussion raised a question with me regarding ā€œbest practiceā€ in managing my SD cards. Based upon what I have read, I always reformat my SD cards in camera after downloading them. I usually shoot 50-100 raw images (20mpx) in a session and thus my 32GB cards are far from full. But for file management reasons, I will format the card when I put it back into the camera. The write cycle discussion left me wondering if I was degrading the write performance of my SD card. In a future episode a follow-up discussion on SD card best practices would be helpful to many of us.

    • Hey David, your approach is the same as mine – just a simple in-camera format. This does not write zeros to the card, so you’re not wearing out the flash memory quickly in the process. Doing this just wipes the file allocation table so that you write new data to the card.

It doesn’t, however, tell the flash controller at a low level that all of the space is free. This is what these fancy ProGrade cards allow for, as well as the re-organizing of data on the cards to free up more pages which (theoretically) improves sequential write performance.

      You’re doing nothing wrong. šŸ™‚
