Rex, an interesting take, but just because something is on a negative doesn't make it "real". Copy stands allow one negative to be copied - but what if the "original" was a digital fabrication being transposed onto film?

Sadly, it's incredibly easy to fake a negative. It would be as authentic as printing off a copy of an AI image and calling it real, simply because it was tangible.

Regarding AI and dealing with photo fakery, here's a thought: for crucial photos that must be identifiably "true", shoot analogue on film. An actual film negative is even better proof of the photo's origins than a raw file.

Can you fake a negative? You probably can, but it would be way harder than throwing AI at a photo, so leas likely to happen, I would argue.

Ah :)

Just looked up the Nikon 1 J2 Pink Kit, that is pink!

I enjoyed time with my son when he did photography at school. Didn't quite start at six and a half years old though!

Great times ahead. :)

Not a bad idea with a skin! Still, I'm sure I'll get some feedback that the camera itself isn't pink! Current front-runner is a Nikon 1 J2 with it's equally pink kit lens.

For a pink camera, look at camera skins. Not sure how old your daughter is, but you may be able to find a decent camera that is NOT pink, and also a skin or wrap that can make the camera pink. I’ve seen vinyl and silicone varieties. I have not researched them extensively, but it may be worth looking into,

Hi Don

I liked to hear the discussion on left eye dominance. That is me all over. I am also left handed by birth. (yes not hatched) LOL I handle my camera as a right handed person. My only inconvenience is I can see what is coming towards me like a right eye shooter. Since I shoot a lot of dirt bike racing I have to be well aware of what is coming towards me. I have a grand kids that are left handed but are right eye dominate. They hold the camera completely different than me.

The biggest thing about having to produce creating while running on empty is just a disaster. In the long run it makes all your work empty too. Having to create one of a kind jewellery for years and years it just get harder as you decline in ideas. Add to that the lack of quality gem stones the problems become even worse.

I now shoot what I want and sell it. I am much better selling in person as people get to know me and why my work is collectable. I know you do art shows and I am willing to bet you get high off the shows and the people. On a high that you don't get from an internet sale.

I liked this podcast as it spoke to me with the camera talk. Keep it up and have fun in your new home.

I love your story of leaving your memory card at home. HAHAHA I have done that too. Now I make sure I have a card stored in the car. As for the new Canon R5C for six hundred bucks more you get more bang for a small price. For some of my friends that are now shooting video this is one step up and still have picture format. For me I am now just getting into video and bought a second hand camera that now has volume control and a few more things for me to master. At 76 years old these things are burning my last few brain cells out. LOL The R5C is a bridge camera and not a pro camera. The price reflects the limitations when you look at the C70 at 6,600 bucks US. or 9 grand CDN. Some people will be shouting with cinema lenses and don't need what the regular lenses need. For the people that like to look at all the short comings I get it when you are at a level far above the normal but it is no different than cars or other products to get you to up buy. In the old days you bought a car with one rear view mirror or one sun visor or arm rests. Got to ask if you thought of the Tesla satellite for your work?

The Pentax 645Z has been using the same sensor that is in the Fuji GFX 50R, 50S and 50S II for seven years. I think Pentax was the first to use the crop medium format in digital with the 645D prior to the 645Z. They still use the full 645 lens mount so their film lenses work on the digital bodies with the crop sensor.

Love the podcast and good luck on the move.

Hi Don

I have always backed up my images on more than two hard drives. My third backup is placed in a safe place and weather sealed. As for storing into the cloud I am not a fan of this at all. We have already seen the loss of images with cloud storage. I also feel that not having your images on the same brand of hard drives as well. I am now culling some of my RAW images to keep less crap. Great podcast.

I enjoy your podcast and listen to it every week.

I was wondering if you could invite some female geek photographers to be guest hosts on your show. I have noticed that you have a large range of male photographers geeking out with you but haven’t come across a female cohost yet.

Keep it up, I sure will listen to you next show.

Don - I found the Peak Design you tube video a little misleading. Right at the beginning the presenter opens up an $80.00 fixit tool kit. Bad start. When all one needs is one small allen wrench. After he takes the head apart and does whatever (He never tells you exactly what he found. He reassembles the head and tells us it's better but sort of implied not good as new. It leaves me with the feeling of "what did he do?". I just purchased one of the peak design tripods. Now I'm afraid I have something that needs to be treated like it's some sort of delicate instrument. I'm not afraid to take stuff apart and I actually have the tool kit shown in the video BUT at 74 years old I've done it my self too many times to find much satisfaction in it. I might add that I have opined at times people should have a license to buy a screwdriver or any tool more complicated. I have seen too many damaged screw heads, stripped threads and otherwise damaged items caused by ham fisted do-it yourselfers. (I'll kick the soap box back under the desk now.)

I did order your new Macro Photography book back on May 10 - How are you doing on shipping?

Not surprisingly, you covered the recent scandal involving our local high school. As a parent who had three kids graduate there, most recently my twin daughters in 2019, I can say that the school has a reputation, known by both students and parents, of enforcing the dress code quite heavy-handedly. The school and (especially) the county school board deserve this bit of public shaming and I hope it ends up with changes made to the code of conduct that reflect more modern styles of modest dress. This is otherwise an excellent school and one of the top public high schools in the state. That the administration has time to police clothing so ruthlessly just underscores the fact that the they don’t have to spend much time policing more serious issues. (Perhaps their time would be better spent teaching the faculty Photoshop?)

I'm not questioning whether it will work well, I am questioning the design process. So many things about that camera feel rushed, which doesn't bode well for long term complications on usability. I can very easily be wrong!
I don't know what the big deal is about the R5? Canon released the specs and told everyone about the limitations. For that they are set on by by every fanboy and most have never touched the camera. Since most people only shoot sort videos instead of long never ending videos, what is the big deal? I would love to own on e of these cameras for shooting sports and wildlife. I do shoot video but in shot bits. Since most videos change the shot every six to ten seconds it would work for me and a lot of my friends. Since shooting racing I have to make sure I use only sealed lenses and cameras. IF i was to do long running vlogs I would buy the right tool for that job and not bitch like an internet mental midget. Great podcast as usual. Thanks

I was surprised by the long discussion about medium format cameras and sensor density since it has been discussed several times with the conclusion that the High pixel count of the sensor does not give an image quality of a larger sensor. A phone camera with a 100 megapixel sensor will not equate to a Phase One.
But, when you look at portraits shot by Gregory Heisler with his 11x14 camera you can see a difference that can not be reproduced with a smaller camera. I think this has a lot to do with the physics of light, the lens, and the size of the film/sensor.

There were 2 discussion items that struck special chords with me last week when I listened to episode 114.

Steve commented on the Sony Alpha camera and how the lens flares out. Not that I’m in the market for a new camera, that knuckle-pinch area really bothered me when I held a friend’s Sony a7. Everything else may be 100%, but I agree with Steve that I would have trouble getting over the “knuckle-pinch” for any period of time.

Don, you brought back memories of watching my dad punch out stereo slides from vacations. I have acquired his View Master equipment when we cleared out the house a few years ago. I still have the camera and special die cutting tool that (after aligning the film & with the press of a lever) would perfectly punch out the pair of frames. He would then use a special pair of tweezers to insert them into a View Master reel. The items are in storage; waiting for me to have the time to evaluate the functionality of it all.

Dad would always shoot Kodachrome (probably 25). I remember that half way through the roll he would have to set a lever and shoot the second half winding the film back into the cartridge. Most of his pictures were underexposed.

He also had the 3-D projector that required us to put on the polarized glasses. The kids hated having to sit around for this.

I had Canon 77D, 200D, 6DmkII and now RP. Every one of those cameras HAS intervalometer build in.

Also STM has nothing to do with fulltime manual focus override. I have 2 lenses with STM and the cameras can be configured that you can override the autofocus any time with the focus ring even when the AF is turned ON.

But the focus ring is not directly connected to focus mechanism. So when turned off, you can not focus manually.

And I don´t think that single photon can hold enough energy to generate multiple electrons. I think the energy must come from somewhere else.

A bit surprised that youf thoughts on Olympus turn to towards how this little Japanese private equity fund is going to turn around a camera company that has been loosing money for years. Never mind that the buyer doesn't know anything about cameras. That the economy is having a rough time everywhere, especially for camera companies. That the buyer does have expertise in selling off the parts of the companies it buys. Guess all these details point to new opportunity for Olympus products to finally get unleashed?!!! Wake up!

Don - I listened with interest your discussion on the rumored Canon long lenses. Canon has dabbled with the Diffraction Optics lenses in the past. There was a 70-300 f4.5 - 5.6 and a 400mm F4. The zoom was quite expensive and not very sharp - I own one. The non 'L' version was sharper in my opinion. The L non DO is a nice lens. The only advantage of the DO version is it's compact size. The 400mm is well thought of and expensive (Approx $7000). I'm pretty sure that the these new rumored long lenses will be expensive.

Change of subject - What's the status of your new book on macro photography? Can I still order a copy?

Hi Don.

I had a publishing company that did very well. It was also based on ad driven existence. When I see the photography magazines of today there is almost no content. Most articles are all advertising driven. As long as I can remember every talk show is how you flog everything. It then makes any articles in print a non event. We see how every kind of fill in is now on You Tube. For me there is only one magazine I will buy as it is made to inspire me and not blast the hell out of me with the same content over and over again. There is also a sad thing about the printing industry. The cost of bricks and mortar has sky rocketed. I have seen a huge printer miss a job by one or two cents per job. When our dollar goes up all the places in the States move the work to China. Now China has invested money we can't compete with to be the largest printers in the world. Our pod cast is so right on point. Business is business is a whole different world than pushing a shutter button. Cheers

Hey Robby, I wish I knew the exact camera models but I don't keep track of this when doing a workshop with a dozen people or more. My focus quickly shifts back to the problems and solutions related to the subject rather than being caught up in the specifics of any one camera, but the inconsistency is noticed by myself and many others that offer photographic instruction.

In my experience the newer cameras behave differently - maybe this is via some custom functions being set. At the very least it's incredibly unintuitive to put a feature like "exposure simulation" (Canon's term) into the center of the back jog wheel button with no other reference to the feature outside of the camera manual.

Still, if you were to compare any Nikon camera to the original Olympus OM-D EM1, there's no contest. Nikon (and every other camera) wins hands down. :)

Hi Don

1st, great show and I never miss an episode but ....

You've mentioned for 2 weeks running that you don't like Nikon because of changes in certain ergonomic functions such as picture playback information.

I agree that there are some ergonomics changes w.r.t. button placement (there are 2 main placement options - 1 for consumer cams and 1 for pro bodies) however I can't recall there being any changes in the playback options for a very long time. In fact, I decided to check this and went through all models in the following ranges (which covers 10+ years of cams and all current ranges):

3xxx
5xxx
7xxx
7xx
8xx
Dx
Z6/7/50

All of these use the standard d-pad up/down presses to cycle through the various option display modes (eg. histogram, exif data, etc.). Just a reminder that you need to initially setup which option display modes you want to make available, in the setup menu before using them. In fact, I believe that Nikon have been very consistent in terms of their menus excluding of course model-specific features.

Can you advise which models you've had an issue with?

Regards, Robby

Hi Don,

Good podcast you have here, always an interesting listen. Unfortunately being a student all the stuff you talk about is way out of the price range for me :)

Recently I got some nice vintage lenses of ebay auctions for under £20 ($26) each. (My trophy find was a SMC Pentax-M 100mm F4 Macro for £18. I spent an evening cleaning it but was totally worth it ) While they do not compare to latest and greatest, after good clean and some testing I found them more that adequate for my hobby needs. Any chance you, or someone else around here can point me to some good resources on vintage lenses. Looking around I found some conflicting info and I'm not sure who to trust.

Maybe, from time to time you can even mention something affordable for students in your picks of the week.

Thanks for quality content,
Dom

As with any person in business you have to look at the value of moving to the next and latest thing. With the new non flapper coming out it will make buying a step up in the used DSLR camera cheaper. When the older cameras fail then it be time to move up. This is true with computers and programs. I see many photographers that have older editing programs that still sell images. Making money has to be the first thing as it means not just surviving but having a balance sheet in the black.

I also think that moving up just for the sake of having the latest and greatest is a waste of money unless you can make use of this new asset and it will pay for itself. With some older cameras you just lye to the camera to get what you want out of it. I have been doing that for years.

I watched Karl Taylor and he had an answer to the question of giving images to clients. I like his answer and have done exactly what his answer was. There are more people out there that has answers to questions that help you work out what clients want.

  Keep the podcasts coming.

Hi Marc, Thanks for listening, and the feedback. Agreed 100% on notifications, and I always set them up for both attended and unattended deployments. That said, email notifications should not be the only option. Even in whitelisted configurations notification emails can trigger false positives. They can get flagged as spam, and even auto-deleted by some systems. Let's take a scenario where a home user configures the outgoing SMTP using their own Yahoo or Hotmail credentials, or even through their domain which is hosted on a shared server. In those cases, an IP address for the MX server can end up on a blacklist which can cause issues upstream from your control. For example, the hosting company could block the email entirely before it ever hits your inbox or anti-spam systems that you have control over. So yes, email notifications should be configured for any event triggers you want / need, but there is no substitution for visual confirmation.

Love the podcast! If I could add to your excellent discussion on NAS/DAS devices. I'm primarily a Synology user but I'm sure any of the mainline NAS manufacturers offer these features.

1) E-mail notifications. I always configure my devices to send these out. That way regardless if you are in front of the device or away from your home/office you will be alerted when an event is logged on your device. This can include RAID array issues, HDD failures, HDD errors, available firmware updates, etc.

2) UPS - I recommend any NAS has its own dedicated UPS. Most come with a USB compatible cable that you can use to connect your NAS to the UPS and configure e-mail alerts so that if you lose power an e-mail will be sent out. In addition, at least with Synology, you can control unit shutdowns so that if your UPS battery level becomes critical the NAS will perform a soft shutdown. Always advisable.

Again, thanks for producing these podcasts! Always great discussion and information.

In the discussion about a possible 75mp Canon R camera there were a few comments made that I had a thought about. I do agree that the 75mp at first glance is a huge number and over the top for most people, I do think some landscape shooters would be interested. If it does make it to market, I would try it myself for the wildlife shots. I shoot a lot of birds and currently my longest decent lens is a 400mm which does not give me the reach to get the tight images without cropping heavily. A larger mp sensor may help with that quite a bit. I shot the Sony A7rIV a few months ago and while I wasn't impressed with the camera overall, the images were some of the best detail I have seen to date. That camera also showed me that if Canon does go large on the mp count that the card slot(s) should absolutely go to the XQD or CFexpress to try and keep that buffer writing fast. The lag on the Sony to get the files to write to an SD card was horrible!

Another great show with Don and Steve. Looking forward to the second Critique show to watch tomorrow.

Hey David, thanks so much for your commentary here! I have seen some great tiny flashlights that push well beyond 1000 lumens, The NiteCore Concept 1 is one that I own that packs 1800 lumens in a super small package. B&H has it as well for $60 without the battery. Gotta love modern technology!

Don and Allan, have to agree that flash story was probably entertainment... But based on fact. Many self defense instructors recommend carrying a small tactical flashlight (of at least 800 to 1000 lumens) with you. With flashlights that bright a quick flash to the face can temp. disable your attacker to allow you to get to safety. Another feature of some of these tactical lights is that they come with a strobe setting so that you can really dis-orient your attacker. If you travel frequently I highly recommend getting one. (I use Fenix UC-35 rechargeable available from B&H for $90 US) It work great and is allowed on air planes.

"Truth" is a difficult concept to convey by either the police or the public, as it is subject to many variables including bias as well as a defensive posture from the perspective of self-preservation. Human nature is difficult to overcome in such instances, but us as a general public would benefit from footage and narratives from all sides to come to our own conclusions. This used to be the realm of investigative journalists, now replaced by citizen journalism on social media. This could be an entire topic of discussion for an hour long podcast on its own!

In the end? Yes. This is our society. Journalistic integrity has never been iron-clad, but now we have to piece together the stories - bias included - from much less reliable sources and infer what we hope to be valuable information. Since the classic forms of journalism will never return to their grandeur, we need to make the best of what we've got.

Hey David, your approach is the same as mine - just a simple in-camera format. This does not write zeros to the card, so you're not wearing out the flash memory quickly in the process. Doing this just wipes the file allocation table so that you write new data to the card.

It doesn't, however, tell the flash controller at a low level that all of the space is free. This is what these fancy ProGrade cards allow for, as well as the re-organizing of data on the cards to free up more pages which (theoretically) improves sequential write performance.

Hey David, your approach is the same as mine – just a simple in-camera format. This does not write zeros to the card, so you’re not wearing out the flash memory quickly in the process. Doing this just wipes the file allocation table so that you write new data to the card.

It doesn’t, however, tell the flash controller at a low level that all of the space is free. This is what these fancy ProGrade cards allow for, as well as the re-organizing of data on the cards to free up more pages which (theoretically) improves sequential write performance.

You’re doing nothing wrong. 🙂

The ProGrade discussion raised a question with me regarding “best practice” in managing my SD cards. Based upon what I have read, I always reformat my SD cards in camera after downloading them. I usually shoot 50-100 raw images (20mpx) in a session and thus my 32GB cards are far from full. But for file management reasons, I will format the card when I put it back into the camera. The write cycle discussion left me wondering if I was degrading the write performance of my SD card. In a future episode a follow-up discussion on SD card best practices would be helpful to many of us.

Hah, thanks so much Rich! I suppose it would look simpler from a programmer's perspective if written with variables - easier to spot the same variable used in multiple locations quickly.

Yes, I understood the design to be for a singlet at least. Imagine the complexities of what used to be a simple triplet design with this methodology applied, or... would that even be necessary?

There are a lot of novel ways to improve lens manufacturing techniques as we push towards higher resolution sensors and a shift towards mobile. Large manufacturers have a hard time adapting to radical changes though, due to their immense investment in more traditional manufacturing facilities. As soon as one major player decides to step outside the box however, we'll see many companies follow. Wouldn't that be fun. :)

Don - After thinking about this for a while...

The formula in the PetaPixel article looks intimidating but there appears to be lot's of repeating terms. In addition it has lots of repeating elements. Without seeing the the whole article I wouldn't feel all that intimidated. It is mostly low level arithmetic. Admittedly lots of it. If I saw triple integrals or partial differential equations I'd get nervous - more likely my stage in life panicked if I had to actually solve it. Please note the solution is for a singlet. I also suspect that the figure is exaggerated for illustrative purposes.

With respect to manufacturing the youtube video link below if from 2005 but it does illustrate how lenses are made. I'm sure that the lens manufacturers could find a way to adapt to this type of shape if needed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovxtgj4SsiI

Although I suspect Canon has automated more of the process for the fabrication of the big white lenses it's not surprising that they cost as much as they do.

Thanks for all the commentary, Rich!

You know, one of my favourite lenses is a Meyer Optik Trioplan 100 - using an optical formula that dates back to 1916. Wide open it has a sought-after soap bubble bokeh effect, stopped down to F/11 it's just a fun sharp mechanical lens that I've used for a number of my macro images (with copious amount of extension tubes). There are so many facets to the discussion, and photographers will always be able to make great images. The real question is when you have the latest-and-greatest tech marketed towards an audience that includes people of all skill level, skill and creativity are not what people start comparing. :)

I have a good number of film cameras, from a Pentax 110 system to a Century Studio 11x14 that I'm hopeful to fully restore at some point. Film is a different experience, and one that photographers should embrace on occasion. At the very least I use those old film lenses on digital cameras - those Pentax 110 lenses fit nicely on MFT bodies with an inexpensive adapter!

Don and Jeff - I'm not sure I would put any credence in the ruminations of the various commentators on the state of affairs at Canon or for that matter Nikon. The tepid reviews of the RP based on the specs were pretty negative. There was a similar negativism with the release of the 5d Mk IV. I still have to believe they know exactly what they are doing. There are some actual user reviews that are pretty positive. Including your friend Martin Bailey. The new R mount supposedly gives them freedom to design some otherwise impossible lenses. Don't know if that is marketing hyperbole or the true. I know that lens design has progressed (changed?) considerably in the past few decades. Last episode Photo Joseph commented on the bokeh from the Mamiya 80mm f1.9. I dug out my 645 manual - that lens has 6 elements compared to the 20ish in modern designs.

So in that vane - I loaded the 645 with film. Then I saw a review ( I think on F stoppers) of the original Pen F half frame and decided I HAD to have one - you can see where this is leading. Then on the "analog insights" you tube channel I watched a review of the Leica IIIg. Couldn't quite afford that camera but did find a Canon IV range finder with a Leica Summar lens. The camera is about the same size as my Pen F (digital and film).

In closing shooting with film can teach a person a lot. But, with a caveat. If you are using a newer camera that is highly automated, let's say a Canon EOS 3, it is not much different than a digital camera with a small memory card. If you have a more elemental camera that you have to focus and set a shutter speed and f stop you now are starting to learn things. (Speaking of the EOS 3 and it's analog siblings I wonder why Canon didn't continue with the eye auto focus.)

Ted Forbes had an interesting commentary on this over at his youtube channel on gear an limitations that is worth watching.

I have rattled on enough - Keep up the good work.
