On this episode, we tackle the challenges of discovering new markets and what Canon and Nikon have been doing to research and develop them. We also cover what back-up strategies you should be exploring, what Google could do with all of Lytro’s patents, and a brief interlude about flying in helicopters and taking pictures. The co-pilot for this episode is none other than the amazing Frederick van Johnson! Enjoy the conversation. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Don from always having to store precious metals. gems and data I use a safe. It not only sores precious stuff but when highly fire rated I stored two hard drives and CDs in house. Storing in a lower level in your home fire will take much longer to get anywhere near your data. Bolted to the floor or embedded in a wall it becomes inhouse smart safety.

You can e-mail me for more details as being a goldsmith for over 40 years security is or was super important.

    Cheers

  2. Thanks a lot for sharing all your knowledge with your listeners!

It was also great to hear Frederick’s voice again and I’m happy to hear that TWiP was brought back to life! Finally! ๐Ÿ™‚

I want to share with you a way of uploading backups to Crashplan using Synology.
“Crashplan for Small Business” plan offers unlimited data storage for $10 a month (per device).
You can set up your Synology, as your device, to upload to Crashplan. Unfortunately, there is no official app from Crashplan but many use an official virtualization app from Synology to do so. It is called, Docker: //www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/feature/docker
If you are interested, you can find step-by-step instructions on how to set it up, here: //hub.docker.com/r/jlesage/crashplan-pro/ and here: //github.com/jlesage/docker-crashplan-pro/issues/34

for those afraid to click on unknown links, simply google: “synology crasphlan docker jlesage”

Just a note, for backups larger than 4TB, don’t forget to set up memory allocation right at the beginning of setting up a docker “container” by using “-e CRASHPLAN_SRV_MAX_MEM=” parameter in the command line => “docker run -d –name=crashplan-pro -e USER_ID=0 -e GROUP_ID=0 -e CRASHPLAN_SRV_MAX_MEM=12288M -p 5800:5800 -v /volume1/docker/appdata/crashplan-pro:/config:rw -v /volume1/:/volume1:ro -v /volume2/:/volume2:ro jlesage/crashplan-pro” this particular command allowed me to assign 12GB of RAM and to backup files from 2 separate volumes. By doing so, I was able to upload over 18TB to Crashplan ๐Ÿ™‚ All done straight from the Synology unit. No need to leave a computer on!

Also, don’t forget that Amazon is still allowing unlimited photo backups, including RAW files, for its Prime members. Upload via Amazon website isn’t the best but Synology comes to the rescue once again! This can be easily done with the help of Cloud Sync app: //www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/feature/cloud_sync

I hope this info helps a little ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thank you once again for all your work!

    • Thanks very much for this info, Greg!

I have had issues with CrashPlan repeatedly saying that they had everything uploaded when only 2TB of a MUCH larger chunk of data was on their servers with their desktop app. It made me very cautious to move forward with them, and the software seemed to keep re-uploading the same data rather than leaving unmodified files alone. It didn’t seem as smooth and straightforward as Carbonite was… but I might give it another shot. As for Amazon Prime members, I remember reading that this was for personal use only. Can’t take a risk that my data will disappear because of a TOS issue randomly and without notice. ๐Ÿ™‚

      All the best,
      – Don Komarechka

P.S. I really do appreciate this sort of feedback – please share any thoughts you have when you listen to future episodes!
