I have had issues with CrashPlan repeatedly saying that they had everything uploaded when only 2TB of a MUCH larger chunk of data was on their servers with their desktop app. It made me very cautious to move forward with them, and the software seemed to keep re-uploading the same data rather than leaving unmodified files alone. It didn’t seem as smooth and straightforward as Carbonite was… but I might give it another shot. As for Amazon Prime members, I remember reading that this was for personal use only. Can’t take a risk that my data will disappear because of a TOS issue randomly and without notice. 🙂

I want to share with you a way of uploading backups to Crashplan using Synology.
“Crashplan for Small Business” plan offers unlimited data storage for $10 a month (per device).
You can set up your Synology, as your device, to upload to Crashplan. Unfortunately, there is no official app from Crashplan but many use an official virtualization app from Synology to do so. It is called, Docker: https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/feature/docker

Just a note, for backups larger than 4TB, don’t forget to set up memory allocation right at the beginning of setting up a docker “container” by using “-e CRASHPLAN_SRV_MAX_MEM=” parameter in the command line => “docker run -d –name=crashplan-pro -e USER_ID=0 -e GROUP_ID=0 -e CRASHPLAN_SRV_MAX_MEM=12288M -p 5800:5800 -v /volume1/docker/appdata/crashplan-pro:/config:rw -v /volume1/:/volume1:ro -v /volume2/:/volume2:ro jlesage/crashplan-pro” this particular command allowed me to assign 12GB of RAM and to backup files from 2 separate volumes. By doing so, I was able to upload over 18TB to Crashplan 🙂 All done straight from the Synology unit. No need to leave a computer on!

Also, don’t forget that Amazon is still allowing unlimited photo backups, including RAW files, for its Prime members. Upload via Amazon website isn’t the best but Synology comes to the rescue once again! This can be easily done with the help of Cloud Sync app: https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/feature/cloud_sync
